INTEGRATION OF PROTESTANTS INTO THE PUBLIC SPACE OF UKRAINE THROUGH SOCIAL MINISTRY: BAPTISTS, PENTECOSTALS, AND SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTISTS (1991–PRESENT)

This article presents a comprehensive historical and religious-studies analysis of the process through which the leading Protestant communities of Ukraine – Baptists, Pentecostals, and Seventh-day Adventists have integrated into the country’s public sphere from the moment of Ukraine’s independence in 1991 to the present day. The study is based on an interdisciplinary approach that combines historical, sociological, and religious-studies perspectives in order to examine the transformation of the role of Protestant communities within Ukrainian society. The central argument of the article is that the overcoming of the marginal status inherited from the Soviet period occurred primarily not through political activism or participation in state power structures, but through the consistent development of social ministry (diakonia), which became the principal mechanism of public presence and social legitimization. The article traces the evolution of social practices from episodic humanitarian initiatives of the early 1990s to the establishment of professional charitable organizations, medical institutions, rehabilitation programs, and extensive volunteer networks. The study also highlights confessional specificities of social engagement, including the development of rehabilitation and social adaptation centers within Baptist communities, the expansion of volunteer movements and chaplaincy ministry among Pentecostals, and the institutionalized models of medical and humanitarian assistance within the Adventist tradition, particularly through the activities of ADRA Ukraine and medical initiatives such as the “Angelia” clinic. It is demonstrated that the participation of Protestant communities in assisting internally displaced persons, conducting evacuation efforts, providing humanitarian aid, and supporting military personnel has contributed to consolidating their status as significant actors of civil society and as important contributors to Ukraine’s national resilience. The article concludes that the model of “service instead of politics” has proven to be an effective strategy for the integration of Protestant communities into the public space of contemporary Ukraine.
