CANCEL CULTURE AS A SOCIO-CULTURAL PHENOMENON: UKRAINIAN ACCENTS

Abstract

The article focuses on the current socio-cultural phenomenon, which is the cancel culture (cultural canceling and the institution of reputation are also synonyms of the concept); its origins and modern content have been investigated. The authors offer a brief overview of the controversy that exists in the Western intellectual space regarding the cancel culture, and outline different points of view on this phenomenon. It is emphasized that today the concept of cancel culture in the Ukrainian intellectual discourse has been updated by the latest events of the Russian-Ukrainian war and is actively considered in the paradigms of cultural studies, sociology, art studies, media studies, journalism, etc. In this context, attention is focused on a new trend: “cancelled Russian culture”, which is realized through the rejection of Russian culture, the world’s ignoring of Russian cultural figures and, more broadly, the Russian cultural product. In the article, as one of the aspects of “cancelled Russian culture”, the facts are singled out, which are the consequences determined by the revision of views on Russian culture. It is emphasized that the Ukrainian dimension of the problem of canceling Russian culture is a multifaceted phenomenon, one of the relevant aspects of which is the cultural reinterpretation of the phenomenon of Russian culture in the world, its connections and differences from Ukrainian culture. One of the most important tasks is the need to reinterpret own cultural heritage, in particular, famous names that are now associated with Russian culture in the world. In this context, the authors concluded that the problem of “cancelled Russian culture” correlates with the problem of post-colonial studies, which is relevant for Ukrainian humanitarianism, and outlined the prospects for researching this issue in the subject field of the national cultural studies.
