Abstract

This article is devoted to the analysis of the process of formation of a young phenomenon known as DJing culture. The focus is on the role of the DJ in the history of popular music and the evolution of sound recording. The development of dance music coincided with technological progress, acquiring its modern form in the second half of the twentieth century. The article uses various sources, such as texts, video and audio materials, interviews, to build its methodology. The main research method is the method of included observation, which includes the author’s own observations. Analysis and synthesis of texts in printed publications, video interviews and documentaries are also used to achieve the research goals. Methods such as interviewing actors of this DJ culture were also relevant for this study. The article answers the question about the essence of the abbreviation DJ in the modern sense and how their activities influenced the development of modern popular music and the recording industry. The article also examines the historical development of some musical genres that arose due to the unique practices of DJs. With the use of documentary materials, the stages of the formation of DJ culture from the “Post-disco” era to the present are highlighted.
