THE EMERGENCE OF STUNDISM IN THE KYIV PROVINCE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY

The article analyzes the historical process of the emergence of Shtundism, an evangelical Christian movement of Protestant orientation, in the Kyiv province. This religious movement penetrated the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century through German colonists who settled in the Kherson province. Peasants from the Kyiv region, who were in a difficult financial situation after the reform of 1861, resorted to seasonal labour migration to the southern provinces, where they came into contact with the immigrants and adopted their beliefs. It has been determined that religious, cultural, and socio-economic factors caused the emergence of Stundism in the Kyiv province. The lack of access to land, the need for labour migration, and contacts with Protestant communities created fertile ground for the spread of alternative religious ideas. Particular attention is paid to the impact of Shtundism on the socio-religious life of the region, as well as the reaction of the authorities and the Orthodox Church to the spread of this movement. The reasons for the popularity of Stundism among the population are its emphasis on personal piety, protest against the formalism of traditional religion, and the desire for spiritual renewal. The authorities considered the Shtundists as a threat to the stability of the state and church order, which led to repression, bans on prayer gatherings and persecution of believers. An analysis of the reasons for the popularity of Shtundism among the peasant population indicates its importance not only as a religious but also as a socio-cultural phenomenon.Stundism provided people with the opportunity for self-organization, and promoted the development of education, as believers were encouraged to study the Holy Scriptures, which in turn contributed to increasing the level of literacy among the population. The study used the works of contemporaries, published historical sources, as well as modern scholarly works that highlight various aspects of this issue over the past decade. The study of the emergence of Stundism in the Kyiv province reveals complex historical processes and helps to better understand the relationship between religious and social changes that took place in Ukraine in the second half of the nineteenth century.
