THE RELIGIOUS FACTOR IN THE FORMATION AND TRANSFORMATION OF EUROPEAN CIVILIZATIONAL IDENTITY

The article outlines the role of the religious factor in the formation and transformation of European civilizational identity and demonstrates the influence of religion on the contemporary interpretation of European identity. The study’s relevance is grounded in the need to conceptualize the ways in which religion shapes the value orientations and social organization of the European community, particularly in the context of Ukraine’s European integration processes and the critical security situation. Adopting a social-constructivist approach, European identity is viewed as a product of social interaction, and the specific features of its evolution are examined from a historical perspective. The study employs methods of analysis and synthesis, generalization, the historical method, and the typological method. The author proposes a typology of the dimensions of religion’s influence on European identity: historicalinstitutional, axiological, and politico-religious. The historical-institutional dimension highlights the role of religious institutions in the formation and transformation of European identity, including during the current stage of progressive secularization. The axiological dimension demonstrates the dependence of values fundamental to European identity on religious-cultural heritage, while also revealing discrepancies between the interpretation of these values within the secular approach of EU institutions and their local perception. The politico-religious dimension highlights the distinctive nature of the influence exerted by political actors – specifically Christian Democratic parties on the construction of European identity, while also reflecting the more active engagement with the religious factor by right-wing and center-right parties in the contemporary era. The article concludes that the religious factor remains a key element in the process of shaping and transforming European civilizational identity. It acts as a resource for integration, yet it can also be a source of conflict depending on the historical context and socio-political challenges.
