PRESERVATION OF HISTORICAL MEMORY AS A DETERMINANT OF CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC ACTIVITY OF NATIONAL COMMUNITIES IN ZHYTOMYR REGION

The formation of the Ukrainian nation’s cultural and artistic heritage and historical memory has taken place over many centuries under the influence of the cultures, experiences, traditions, and knowledge of various nations who have inhabited Ukrainian territories for ages. In the historical memory of ethnic communities in Zhytomyr Region (Poles, Jews, Germans, Old Believers, Czechs, Roma, and others), memories of their own past are preserved. This allows to analyze certain aspects of the preservation and development of interethnic communication among the national communities of Zhytomyr Polissia at the current stage of ecoculture and its impact on the formation and progress of interethnic relations in the region. Despite the harsh assimilation policies created by imperial and Soviet authorities, open competition between Ukrainians and other national communities representatives in socio-economic relations, often accompanied by hostility and the emergence of domestic conflicts, local traditional communities have preserved their own religion, language, cultural identity, and tolerant attitudes towards each other. Since the 1980s, the historical memory of ethnic communities in Zhytomyr Polissia preservation has been facilitated by the activation of cultural and artistic activities of Polish, Jewish, and other national associations, which helps to establish effective interethnic communication. This includes various cultural and artistic practices of ethnic creative groups (vocal, choreographic, theatrical, etc.). Particular attention is given to the analysis of the implementation of the cultural-historical initiative “Protect Memory”, dedicated to memorializing the places of mass shootings of Jews and Roma from various regions of Ukraine, including the Zhytomyr Region, during the Second World War. This initiative played a significant role in preserving the historical memory of the Ukrainian nation and strengthening interethnic communication among the ethnic groups in the specified region.
