Abstract

The article examines the historical role of animals in peacekeeping operations, highlighting their indispensable contributions in various contexts of armed conflicts and humanitarian missions. Specifically, it analyzes the participation of dogs in search and rescue operations, explosive detection, and providing emotional support to victims. From ancient civilizations to modern conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries, animals have repeatedly demonstrated their importance in the most challenging and dangerous situations. Since the onset of major global conflicts of the last century, the role of animals has significantly expanded. Search and rescue dogs are actively used during natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes, helping to find and rescue survivors. Their ability to penetrate debris, acute sense of smell, and hearing allow them to save lives that would otherwise be lost. The role of explosive detection dogs in conflict zones and border checkpoints is also significant. Their ability to detect explosives, drugs, and other hazardous materials makes them indispensable in ensuring the safety of military personnel and civilians. Examples from Afghanistan and the Middle East illustrate their crucial role in uncovering hidden threats and preventing terrorist attacks. Moreover, the article discusses the use of therapy animals in humanitarian missions. After traumatic events such as natural disasters or wars, the presence of therapy dogs helps victims cope with stress and anxiety. Their emotional support promotes quicker recovery and restoration of the mental health of victims. The research emphasizes the necessity of recognizing the importance of animals in peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. They not only perform practical tasks but also provide psychological support, enhancing the effectiveness of operations and improving the lives of people in conflict and disaster zones. Further research and the development of programs involving animals in peacekeeping missions can significantly increase their effectiveness and humanity.
