THE CONCEPT OF WAR AND PEACE IN WESTERN CHRISTIANITY

The article is devoted to the study of the problem of war and peace in Western Christianity. The analysis of Catholic social doctrine allowed to form the main characteristics of the categories of “war” and “peace” in the Christian interpretation.The authors dwell in detail on the concept of a “just war”. They determine the conditions for its conduct, features and criteria. Based on the analysis of the works of theologians of the Middle Ages, the authors managed to trace the formation of the theory of a “just war”. The transformation of the content of the idea of a just war in a historical excursion is investigated. It has been proven that the theory of “just war” in Christian doctrine is based on the idea that war can be justified only under certain conditions. Among them, defense against aggression or prevention of greater harm. An important point is that a “just war” is always a defensive war.It is substantiated that the essence of a “just war” depends not only on understanding the essence of war, but also on understanding the concept of justice. The authors have identified the main criteria for a just war: a just beginning of war, a just conduct of war, a just end of war. It is concluded that the concept of a “just war” becomes the basis on which the theological understanding of such important categories as “war” and “peace” develops.It is revealed that the just war in Catholic social doctrine is considered defensive. It is emphasized that the social teaching of Catholics does not justify war. Theologians call for the use of all available means to prevent or end war. It is noted that the concept of “just war” is not a positive concept. It is concluded that war is an evil and a defeat of peace. However, in some cases, war is considered in Western Christianity as a lesser and necessary evil. It is emphasized that Western Christian doctrine focuses on the spread and establishment of peace. It is emphasized that the provisions of the concept of just war are consistent with the ideas of justice, humanity and protection of individual rights.
