This article examines the postmodern understanding of the religious concept of God. It takes as its example
the anatheism of Richard Kearney, an Irish public intellectual, specialist in contemporary continental philosophy,
and author of the concept of «diacritical hermeneutics». For postmodernists, the concept of God is not a single,
objective, or metaphysical truth. The death of metanarratives (grand ideologies that explain the world) has also
affected religious truths. Postmodernism deconstructs all fixed structures, including the fixed (conservative,
metaphysical) image of God. Richard Kearney’s anatheism emphasizes that humanity lives in the era of «the death
of God» (the metaphysical God-architect). But this is not a basis for atheism. Kearney proposes anatheism (Greek:
ana – again, theos – God). Kearney rejects ontotheology, dismissing belief in God as an object that can be «proved»
and proposes viewing the sacred as a «call» that arises in human experience through an encounter with a stranger,
and thus with a neighbor
