Abstract

The article conducts a culturological analysis of a new research area – an audiovisual essay. The author proposes considering it as a form of practice that shapes the process of thinking and thus creates new opportunities for research purposes. Such an approach is now becoming increasingly popular in digital humanities. Supercut is introduced as an example of an audiovisual essay, which allows studying various components of the film to find patterns between its parts. Special attention is paid to the ideas of material thinking and the method of videographic deformation proposed by J. Mittell. The experiment of the above-mentioned researcher “balanced pulse”, which contributes to the unique study of cinema, is considered. The film “Mulholland Dr.” (2001), in which the new method significantly intensifies premonition, is mentioned as a source of the application of the relevant tool. Another example of videographic distortion is “Volume Cinema” (2015), which demonstrates an attempt to consider cinema as a wave.
