THE ESSENCE OF THE STATE AS A FACTOR IN IMPROVING CHURCH-STATE RELATIONS

The article is devoted to analyzing state-church relations in Ukraine, their historical evolution, legal regulation, and the influence of political processes on the religious sphere. The author considers various models of interaction between the state and religious organizations, starting from the period of the Roman Empire, medieval Europe, and the Russian Empire, up to the Soviet era and modern Ukraine. Particular attention is paid to the events after the Revolution of Dignity in 2014, as well as the consequences of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, which radically changed the country’s religious landscape. It analyzes how religious institutions influenced socio-political processes, as well as the role of the state in resolving interfaith conflicts.A separate section is devoted to the legal aspects of regulating religious life in Ukraine, including constitutional norms, national legislation, and international legal standards. The article examines the issue of competition between religious denominations, particularly between the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate), as well as the impact of receiving the Tomos on autocephaly in 2019. The article analyzes the response of the Ukrainian authorities to the challenges associated with religious organizations’ activities that may threaten national security. The article highlights the prospects for improving state-church relations in Ukraine through updating legislation, strengthening control over the activities of religious structures, and supporting dialogue between the state and the church, taking into account international experience and social challenges.
